The South Flank project is set to fully replace production from the 80 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) Yandi mine, which is nearing the end of its economic life. Iron ore shipments from the Yandi mine began in 1991.

Supplied through a collaboration with bp, the renewable diesel made from HVO will be used in haul trucks and other mining equipment over an initial three-month trial period.

The Yandi iron ore mine is a part of an 85:15 joint venture between BHP, and Mitsui and ITOCHU. Ore from the Yandi open cut mine is processed on site and taken to Port Hedland by rail for export to key markets in Asia.
